Account number preferences
Choose how Fineract builds client, loan, savings, and other account numbers — prefix per entity.
Open System → Account number preferences (or Ctrl+K and type "account number"). You need READ_ACCOUNTNUMBERFORMAT to view the list. CREATE_ACCOUNTNUMBERFORMAT, UPDATE_ACCOUNTNUMBERFORMAT, and DELETE_ACCOUNTNUMBERFORMAT control the buttons. Superusers with ALL_FUNCTIONS see everything.
Each preference is one account type (client, loan, savings, center, group,
shares, or working capital loan — membership comes from
GET /accountnumberformats/template). Fineract allows only one preference
per type. New accounts of that type get a number built from the preference;
numbers already issued do not change.
What you can do
- Browse preferences by account type, with optional search.
- Create a preference: pick an unused account type and an optional prefix. Prefix choices come from the template for that type (office name, product short name, client type, or a custom prefix). Shares have no prefix options.
- Edit the prefix. The account type cannot change after create. Fineract cannot clear a prefix back to none — delete and recreate if you need that.
- Delete a preference from the row menu. Existing account numbers stay as they are.
- Export the filtered list as CSV or Excel.
Prefix and number body
The prefix is prepended to a numeric body. The body is either a zero-padded generated id or a random number when random-account-number is on in Configurations. Length follows custom-account-number-length when that flag is enabled. This screen does not toggle those flags.
A custom prefix (Fineract PREFIX_SHORT_NAME) also needs the prefix
characters themselves (up to 50). Fineract trims prefixes to 10 characters
when it builds the number.
Maker-checker
When maker-checker is enabled on the tenant, preference changes may queue for approval in the Checker Inbox instead of applying immediately.
